This instrumental section accompanies the waki’s entrance in plays that have been preceded by a performance of Okina. It is played by the nohkan and a single kotsuzumi. The nohkan part consists of a sequence of standard patterns, while the kotsuzumi features a symmetric pattern distributed over two honji, labeled as a and a'. Although the a-a' pattern may be ornamented, its core structure remains clearly discernible.

The shōdan is divided into four parts. In the first two sections, the instruments alternate, while they play together in the last two.

A The nohkan opens the shōdan with a Ryo pattern (0:10) that focuses on its lower register, followed by a Kan pattern (1:20) transitioning to the higher register. The kotsuzumi then introduces its pattern: a-a' (1:43).

B (2:17): The nohkan performs the Naka no takane pattern, leading into the kotsuzumi’s a-a' pattern (2:42).

C The nohkan begins this section with the Takane hane pattern over the kotsuzumi’s a-a' pattern (3:31).

D The opening of this part coincides with the curtain rising. The nohkan initiates a series of patterns, soon joined by the kotsuzumi’s patterns: a-a' (4:30), aaaa' (5:08), aa"a' (6:15), and ba' (6:51), where "b" resembles a cadential pattern.
